Digital signage cost comes from four places: the screens, the devices that play content, the software subscription, and the content itself. Only one of them, the software, is a recurring fee.
1. Screens
You can use ordinary consumer TVs or commercial-grade displays. Commercial displays are built for long daily hours and often cost more; consumer TVs cost less but are not designed to run all day. The right choice depends on how many hours the screen runs and whether it is in a public, high-traffic space.
2. Players
Every screen needs a device to play content. Some software needs proprietary hardware; a software-only player such as the DisplayNyx player runs on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer or mini PC you may already have. Avoiding proprietary boxes is one of the biggest ways to lower the up-front cost.
3. The software subscription
Most digital signage software is priced per screen per month, often with tiers that lower the rate as you add screens. DisplayNyx is pay as you go from $5 to $9 per screen per month depending on how many screens you run, with a 7-day free trial. Use the pricing calculator to estimate your own number.
- Check whether the price is per screen, per location, or a flat plan with limits.
- Check what is included: extra users, extra locations, storage, video walls, announcements.
- Check whether adding one screen pushes you into a much more expensive tier.
4. Content
Content can be free if you make it yourself, using templates, or with AI image generation, or paid if you hire a designer. Templates keep routine changes such as a new price or a new special from needing design help at all.
5. Installation and upkeep
Mounting and cabling are one-time costs. Ongoing upkeep is mostly remote: monitoring screens, replacing a failed device, and updating content. Software with health monitoring and alerts reduces the site visits.
A quick way to estimate
Multiply your screen count by the per-screen rate for a software estimate, then add hardware once. For a chain, compare the recurring subscription against what you currently spend on printing and distributing signs; the saving usually comes from not reprinting.
