Screen Analytics: What Played, Where, and How Often

5 min read

It's one thing to know a promo is assigned to a screen; it's another to know it actually played, how many times, and where. DisplayNyx's Analytics page exists to answer exactly that: not a vanity dashboard, but a record of real playback pulled straight from the screens themselves.

The core unit: one play, one screen, one duration

Every time a media file plays on a screen, the player app reports it back: which file, which screen, and how long it played for. That single event is the building block behind everything else on the page, an actual playback record, not an estimate based on what's scheduled.

Repetition: how often something actually played

The first leaderboard ranks your media by appearances: how many times each file has played across your fleet in the selected date range. It's the direct answer to "is anyone actually seeing this promo," and it's just as useful for spotting the opposite, a file assigned everywhere that's barely playing because of a schedule window that's too narrow.

Screen time: duration, not just count

Play count alone can be misleading: a 5-second image that loops constantly can rack up more appearances than a 45-second video that plays less often but holds the screen far longer. A second leaderboard ranks the same media by total screen time instead, the summed duration across every play, so a high-repetition file and a high-duration file don't get confused with each other.

Broken down by location and by screen

Every number on the page, appearances, screen time, everything, splits by location and by screen. A chain-wide promo might be running well overall while quietly underperforming at one store, or one specific screen within a store might not be picking up content the way the rest of the fleet is. The location and screen filters (which narrow each other as you pick one or the other) are how you catch that instead of only seeing a fleet-wide average.

Drilling down: one file, or one screen

Search for a specific media file and you'll see its total screen time and appearance count broken down location by location and screen by screen, exactly where that one promo is actually landing. Go the other direction from a specific screen and you get its own media breakdown: everything that's played there and how much of that screen's runtime each file accounted for.

Filtering by date range

Every view on the page respects a date range: quick presets for the last 7, 30, or 90 days, an all-time view, or a custom range picked from a calendar. Worth knowing: playback history only exists from whenever a given screen's player app started reporting these events, so a screen running an older build may show a shorter history than one that's been up to date the whole time.

Uptime is tracked separately, on the dashboard

What played is a different question from whether a screen was even online, and DisplayNyx tracks that separately too: the main dashboard shows a fleet-wide uptime trend derived from each screen's own online/offline status, not from playback logs. Between the two, you get both signals: whether your screens were up, and, when they were, what was actually showing on them.
